Meticulous judges give grades in areas ranging from costumes to percussion to harmony, making a tenth decision. “Imperatriz Leopoldinense” told the story of the rogue king Lampião from northeastern Brazil in an unconventional way during Tuesday night’s parade at the Sambodrome. Choreographer and director Leandro Vieira, who brought “Imperatriz” to the premier league and won with “Mangueira” in 2016 and 2019, was inspired by the small format booklets of folk literature. “Viradouro” also chose a historical theme, Rosa Maria Egipcíaca. He had come from Africa as a slave and was writing a book in Brazil.

Twelve of the best schools paraded through the samba stadium until the early hours of the morning on Sunday and Monday with exuberant costumes, spectacular floats and innovative special effects. Tens of thousands of people in the stands and booths, as well as millions in front of television in Brazil and around the world, often follow the parades on the oversized catwalks.

Rio Carnival is considered to be “the biggest party in the world”. After two years when the corona epidemic prevented or restricted the festival, this time the parades in the sambodrom and the street carnival are back in all aspects.
