During an interview with Caio Luz, a Brazilian advocate for African immigrants in Brazil, he remarked, “Have you ever thought about returning home on Friday with free bus rides? Imagine leaving your car at home, enjoying Happy Hour after work, and returning safely without driving. And on Saturday, handling tasks that couldn’t be addressed during the week, all without paying for bus fares? This is ‘Free Transport Friday’, a new possibility for São Paulo.”
Currently, over 100 cities in Brazil offer some form of fare-free transit, yielding evident benefits. In neighboring São Caetano do Sul, medical appointment rescheduling decreased after fare gates were removed. Paranaguá-PR saw a 30% increase in local commerce sales, while Caucaia-CE experienced a 25% rise in municipal revenue following the implementation of fare-free transit.
In São Paulo, Mayor Ricardo Nunes’s diligent efforts to maintain fiscal balance and enhance investment capacity led to the implementation of “Free Sunday Transport” in December 2023, resulting in 80 million passengers transported since then and a 30% increase in park visitors, among other benefits.
Expanding fare-free transit nationwide necessitates a federal pact involving municipalities, states, and the federal government. São Paulo, known for its leadership in public policies, can swiftly make “Free Transport Friday” a reality for the city. The current subsidy for public transport is sufficient for implementation and upkeep in the years ahead. It’s not a dream; it’s Free Transport Friday, and I have the means to make it happen,” concluded Caio Luz.
