VIDEO: Lawyer Targeted by Racist Attacks in São Paulo’s South Zone; Suspect Detained and Released Without Statement
The incident took place on the night of Wednesday, 31st, in the Sacomã region. The insults were made by the partner of the ex-husband of a client of the lawyer, during a family dispute. The Military Police are trying to identify the team that handled the incident to understand the release of the aggressor.
A 52-year-old lawyer was the target of racist insults in the South Zone of São Paulo on Wednesday night (31st). According to Cristiane Linhares, the attacks occurred while she was advising a client during a family dispute in the Sacomã region.
The case was registered as racial slander at the 26th Police District (Sacomã) early Thursday morning (1st) and forwarded to the 95th Police District (Heliópolis), which is analyzing the evidence and will question the woman investigated for the crime.
The victim and other involved parties have already been questioned. Regarding the release of the 42-year-old suspect, the Military Police are working to identify the officers who handled the incident and to investigate the circumstances surrounding the release.
The lawyer filmed the moment when she was called a “monkey” by the current partner of her client’s ex-husband (see video above). “I went there to perform my professional duties. I did not speak to her, did not have any contact with her, and she called me a monkey,” Cristiane recounted.
She said that she called the police, and the aggressor was taken to the police station but was released without giving a statement. “When the police arrived, I believed that justice would be done because before showing the video of the racial slander, I identified myself as a lawyer. So, I thought: I, as a legal professional, who understands a bit about the law, they could never hesitate, but they did nothing; they did not arrest the woman,” she said.
The incident has sparked outrage and raised questions about the handling of racist incidents by the authorities. Advocates for racial justice are calling for a thorough investigation and appropriate actions to be taken against the perpetrator and the officers involved.
Cristiane Linhares emphasized the need for accountability and justice. “This isn’t just about me; it’s about every Black person who faces racism and discrimination daily. We need to ensure that such behavior is not tolerated and that those responsible are held accountable,” she stated.
The lawyer has garnered support from various human rights organizations and the broader community, who are urging for stricter enforcement of anti-racism laws in Brazil. The incident highlights the ongoing struggle against racial prejudice and the necessity for systemic changes to address such deep-rooted issues.
Efforts are being made to ensure that the case receives the attention it deserves, and there are calls for more robust measures to protect victims of racial abuse and to prevent similar incidents in the future. The public is closely watching to see how the authorities will respond and whether justice will be served in this case.
As the investigation continues, Cristiane Linhares and her supporters remain steadfast in their pursuit of justice, hoping that this incident will lead to meaningful changes and greater awareness about the pervasive issue of racism in Brazil.
