
A groundbreaking scientific study has reinforced what history, culture, and lived experience have long suggested: Brazil is one of the most genetically diverse countries in the world. Published in the prestigious journal Science, the research reveals the discovery of more than 8.7 million previously undocumented genetic variants, over 36,000 of which may have direct implications for human health. The findings represent a major milestone for global genetics and open new paths for precision medicine, particularly for people of African and Indigenous ancestry who have historically been underrepresented in scientific research.
It is often said, half-jokingly, that the Brazilian passport is the most difficult to falsify because almost anyone in the world could plausibly be Brazilian. From the dark complexion and Afro-descendant features of football legend Pelé to the Germanic traits of supermodel Gisele Bündchen, Brazil embodies an extraordinary spectrum of human appearance. This diversity is not accidental but the result of centuries of intense population mixing among Indigenous peoples, European colonizers, enslaved Africans, and later waves of immigrants from Europe, the Middle East, and Asia. Until now, however, this genetic richness had never been documented in such depth.

The study analyzed complete genome sequences from more than 2,700 Brazilians collected over a five-year period. According to one of the lead authors, renowned geneticist Lygia V. Pereira of the University of São Paulo, the research fills a critical gap in global genomics. For decades, genetic databases have been overwhelmingly based on white European populations. By sequencing a population with substantial African and Indigenous ancestry, the researchers were able to identify millions of genetic variants that had never before been described anywhere in the world.
Brazil’s genetic complexity mirrors its historical formation. At the time of Portuguese colonization in the 16th century, an estimated 10 million Indigenous people inhabited the territory. Over the following centuries, more than five million enslaved Africans were forcibly brought to Brazil, making it the largest destination of the transatlantic slave trade. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the Brazilian state actively promoted European immigration as part of a now-discredited ideology aimed at “whitening” the population. Around five million immigrants, primarily Italians, Germans, and Spaniards, settled mainly in the south and southeast, while significant communities from Lebanon, Syria, and Japan also established deep roots. Today, São Paulo hosts the largest population of Japanese descendants outside Japan.

Unlike other highly diverse countries, such as the United States, where segregation policies historically restricted racial mixing, Brazil experienced intense and continuous miscegenation. Among the more than 2,700 individuals analyzed, nearly all showed genetic contributions from European, African, and Indigenous ancestors. The only exception was a small group of São Paulo residents with almost entirely East Asian ancestry, likely reflecting the relatively recent nature of Japanese immigration.
For much of the 20th century, Brazil celebrated this mixture as proof of a supposed “racial democracy,” the idea that Black, white, and Indigenous populations coexisted in harmony. While the study does not directly address social theory, its genetic findings quietly dismantle this myth by revealing how deeply violence and inequality shaped Brazil’s population. The researchers found that 71% of Y chromosome lineages, passed through male ancestry, are of European origin, while most mitochondrial DNA, inherited through the maternal line, is of African (42%) or Indigenous (35%) origin. This pattern strongly suggests a historical process marked by asymmetrical power relations, including sexual violence against Indigenous and African women during colonization and slavery, as well as higher mortality rates among enslaved men and Indigenous peoples.
One of the study’s most significant findings is the identification of 36,637 rare and potentially harmful genetic variants that are more common among individuals with African or Indigenous ancestry. These discoveries represent a crucial first step toward understanding how genetics may predispose different populations to specific diseases. Current medical knowledge about genetic risk factors for conditions such as breast cancer is largely based on studies of white populations. The new data will allow researchers to investigate whether distinct variants present in other populations also influence disease risk, progression, and response to treatment.
The study is part of the Genomas Brasil program, launched by the Brazilian Ministry of Health five years ago with the goal of sequencing the complete genomes of 100,000 Brazilians. Its long-term objective is to integrate precision medicine into the country’s public healthcare system, enabling earlier disease detection, safer and more effective treatments, and more accurate risk assessments tailored to Brazil’s diverse population. Beyond its national impact, the research represents a significant contribution to global science, challenging long-standing biases in genetics and medicine and bringing the world closer to truly inclusive healthcare.
