Onyeka Onwenu, renowned for her contributions to music, acting, and journalism, passed away on Tuesday evening in Lagos at the age of 72. Known as the “Elegant Stallion” by the Nigerian press, Ms. Onwenu was born on January 31, 1952
Reports indicate that she collapsed and died following a performance at the 80th birthday celebration of her friend, Chief Stella Okoli, founder of Emzor Pharmaceuticals. She was rushed to Reddington Hospital but was pronounced dead upon arrival.
Ms. Onwenu began her music career in the 1980s, releasing her debut album, “For Your Love,” in 1981. She gained widespread recognition for her hit single “One Love” and her duet with King Sunny Ade titled “Wait For Me,” which addressed population control and family planning in Nigeria. Her song “African Woman” celebrated the beauty and resilience of African women, highlighting issues like poverty, widowhood, and abuse. Another notable song, “Sodom and Gomorrah,” offered a biblical retelling of the city’s destruction due to immorality.
In addition to her musical achievements, Onwenu starred in numerous Nollywood films and received various awards for her contributions to the entertainment industry. Her impact extended beyond entertainment into politics; in 2013, she was appointed Executive Director/Chief Executive Officer of the National Centre for Women Development by the Goodluck Jonathan administration. In 2011, she was honored as a Member of the Order of the Federal Republic (MFR).
Ms. Onwenu’s legacy as a cultural icon and advocate for social causes will be remembered and celebrated.
