In what insiders describe as part of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s ongoing diplomatic reshuffle, sources close to the Presidency have disclosed to ‘The Ancestral News’ that former Minister of Aviation and prominent political figure, Femi Fani-Kayode, is being considered for appointment as Nigeria’s next Ambassador to Brazil. The nomination, according to the sources, remains subject to Senate confirmation and the completion of formal diplomatic credentialing in Brasília.
The development follows recent proceedings at the National Assembly, where the Nigerian Senate concluded a comprehensive ambassadorial screening exercise conducted by the Senate Committee on Foreign Affairs. During the session, lawmakers examined the credentials, diplomatic preparedness, and prior public service records of several high-profile nominees submitted by the executive.
At the end of the screening, the committee cleared former Minister of Aviation and senior political figure, Femi Fani-Kayode, alongside a list of prominent nominees drawn from across Nigeria’s political and administrative landscape. Those approved include political commentator and former presidential aide Reno Omokri; former governors Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi of Enugu State and Okezie Ikpeazu of Abia State; as well as former Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Mahmood Yakubu, among others.
Sources familiar with the process indicate that the proposed diplomatic postings, once ratified by the Senate, will be followed by formal credentialing and deployment to various foreign missions, including key strategic countries where Nigeria seeks to strengthen bilateral, economic, and cultural ties.
According to a senior aide familiar with the nominations who spoke on condition of anonymity, the assignment to Brazil is expected to be one of the most strategically significant postings in Nigeria’s diplomatic rea-engagement plans for 2026, given the expanding economic, cultural, and political ties between Nigeria and Brazil in trade, energy cooperation, and diaspora affairs.
The aide said that while the Senate has cleared Fani-Kayode and his colleagues in committee, a final plenary vote by the Senate remains pending. Once confirmed, the President could formally announce the postings before the end of December or January , allowing envoys to assume their posts early next year.
In recent weeks, president Tinubu has been recalibrating his diplomatic corps with a mix of career foreign service experts and prominent non-career figures, a strategy that has drawn both praise and criticism. Supporters argue the blend of political experience and professional diplomacy will increase Nigeria’s global footprint, while critics warn about sidelining of seasoned career diplomats.
Should the posting be confirmed, Fani-Kayode’s alleged Brazil assignment will place him at the forefront of deepening relations with one of Africa’s key partners in the Global South, reinforcing Nigeria’s presence in South America.
