CAPE TOWN, South Africa — A busy shopping area in Parklands was thrown into chaos on Saturday, 4 April, after a dispute among a group of Nigerian nationals escalated into a violent confrontation marked by gunfire, panic, and a swift police response.
The incident unfolded near the popular Morningfield Spar during peak hours, when shoppers and residents were going about their daily activities. Eyewitnesses reported that what began as a heated argument quickly spiralled out of control, with multiple gunshots ringing through the area and forcing people to flee for safety.
According to accounts from the scene, the dispute is believed to have centered on disagreements over money within the group. Tensions reportedly escalated within minutes, with some individuals allegedly brandishing firearms, while others were said to be armed with weapons such as axes.
The sound of gunfire sent waves of fear across the neighborhood, as people scrambled for cover inside shops, behind vehicles, and in nearby buildings. Several businesses were forced to shut their doors temporarily as the situation unfolded, disrupting commercial activities in one of Parklands’ busiest zones.
Witnesses described a scene of confusion and urgency, with bystanders unsure of the scale of the threat or the number of individuals involved. Amid the chaos, two vehicles , a red Range Rover and a silver Audi were seen speeding away from the scene shortly after the shooting. Reports indicate that the intended target of the attack managed to escape unharmed.
Authorities arrived shortly after the incident and have since launched an investigation. Law enforcement officials are currently reviewing CCTV footage from surrounding businesses and traffic cameras in an effort to identify those involved and piece together the sequence of events. As of now, there has been no official confirmation regarding arrests or injuries.
The incident has reignited concerns about the safety of public spaces in parts of Cape Town, particularly in areas such as Parklands and nearby Milnerton, where residents say tensions and sporadic violence have become increasingly worrying.
Speaking from the scene, eyewitness Chinedu Eze expressed deep concern over what he described as a growing pattern of unrest. “This unrest has been like that since the episode of the Igbo king in South Africa, which has caused demonstrations in the country. This must stop,” he said, pointing to broader tensions within segments of the community.
Community members and local business owners have also voiced alarm over the impact of such incidents on daily life, warning that repeated outbreaks of violence risk undermining both public safety and economic stability in the area.
Police have appealed to members of the public to come forward with any information that could assist in the investigation, as efforts continue to bring those responsible to justice and restore calm in the community.
