A Nigerian-American law student, Ifeanyi Ruth Umunna, has been elected as Co-President of the Student Government at Harvard Law School for the 2026–2027 academic year, marking a significant milestone in her academic and leadership journey.
The election, announced by the student body, places Umunna at the forefront of student leadership in one of the world’s most prestigious law institutions. She will serve alongside co-president Tenzin Yonten, representing and advocating for the interests of law students across the school. 
Reacting to her election, Umunna expressed gratitude and readiness to serve, stating that she was “humbled and honoured” by the confidence reposed in her by fellow students.
Umunna’s emergence as student government president reflects a track record of academic excellence and leadership. Prior to enrolling at Harvard, she was a Gates Cambridge Scholar at the University of Cambridge, where she earned a Master of Philosophy in Criminology with a focus on international criminal justice systems. 
She previously graduated summa cum laude in Political Science from American University and has held several leadership roles, including founding a nonprofit initiative aimed at bridging the technology gap for justice-involved individuals.
Beyond academics, Umunna has gained practical experience in governance and law, having worked as a congressional aide in the United States and interned with public defender offices and legal advocacy organizations. She is also the daughter of Dehlia Umunna, a Clinical Professor of Law at Harvard Law School and a respected figure in criminal justice education.
Her election is being widely regarded as a moment of pride for the Nigerian diaspora, highlighting the growing impact of Nigerians in global academic and leadership spaces. With her background in public service, legal advocacy, and student leadership, Umunna is expected to play a key role in shaping student engagement and policy discussions at Harvard Law School.
The new administration is expected to focus on student welfare, inclusive representation, and strengthening the relationship between students and the institution’s leadership.
