Located in the northern region of Saopaulo state , at an altitude of 585 meters, at latitude 21°36’12” south and longitude 48°21’57” west. the estimated population of Matao in 2017 was 82,307 inhabitants, spread over 524,899 km² of area.
Matao , an example in social reintegration , is succeeding in implementing what advanced countries are yet to find lasting solutions , it has set a strategic model to easily reintegrates its citizens to the society . A model that has made Matao one of the cleanest municipal in Brazil
The development and citizenship department has embarked on a serious inclusion of every citizen in the streets of Matão . It has created a system tagged RENASCER in Portuguese, meaning Arise again or born again in English , the initiative has cleared the streets of Matao from homeless , drug addicts , drunkards , Lunatics and other unhealthy characters stranded in the streets of Matao “ Matão is an example , it runs a number of social programs to support the people of Matao . According to Luiz Tamanini , “ the model is unique , it is a joint function of the local government , the environmental dept , the inclusion and citizenship dept , and a team of specialists “ the director stipulated the exceptional contribution of the Mayor of Matao , Cido Ferrariin , towards the city as model to other communities in Brazil , he spoke of the exceptional contribution of Petrosol , the company of Solange Kaziyama which contracts reintegrated men and women to work in her company as a form of social contribution in partnership with Renascer Reintegration Center , the initiative of Luiz Tamanini
A city of of example , Matão also coordinates a project tagged MATÃO + VERDE , a project to encourage planting of árvores in the community. The initiative started through the Municipal Conference on Education, Culture and Environment, held by the Municipality of Matão, on October 22 and 23, 2005, with the theme: “On the Path to Responsible Inclusion”; and with the motto: “We are the sum of our dreams”, that was when a group focused on environmental issues was born, which was later named Matao + verde on 10th , November 2005 . “ It is important to plant árvores , we make sure that every child born in the city of Matão plants a tree , the parents are advised and dates are marked to join other families and plant trees in Matao . This is another voluntary project that is a success” Says Antonio Carlos Bandelli , Coordinator, Matao+Verde .
According to an ex homeless , now living in RENASCER centre , he said : “ I am happy to have been discovered in the streets and brought to this home . Today , i walk well , my health is fantastic. I do not Intend to leave this home again “ says the aged Brazilian
According to history , MATÃO as a city , originated due to the existence of dense forests , it was earlier called Campo de Água Vermelha by José Inocêncio da Costa who lived in a hut located near the stream that separates the city from Vila Santa Cruz.
The founding families of Ismael da Silveira Leite and his brothers Theófilo Francisco and Sérgio, Amador Pires Corrêa, José de Arruda Campos, Antonio da Silva Coelho, José Brochado Corrêa, Leão Pio Freitas established themselves in the area running coffee farms . The salubrity of the place and aiming to provide more comfort to its residents, the idea of founding a village was born.
MATÃO was elevated to the category of Municipality, dismembered from the municipality of Araraquara. Today , the city of Matao is a model in the state of SaoPaulo, Brazil
