The rich and vibrant culture of Yoruba art is inspiring academics and students in Brazil, as they explore the works of renowned Nigerian artist, Adeyinka Olaiya. An exhibition of his art was recently inaugurated in Sao Paulo, where visitors were treated to a stunning display of Olaiya’s creations, which draw heavily from the Yoruba tradition.

The exhibition, titled “Aláşekù – Ancestral choes “, is on display at the Museum of Modern Art , Centro Cultural Casa de Angola in Sao Paulo and featured over 20 pieces of Olaiya’s art. The exhibition was curated by an academic, Prof. Izidoro who has been studying Yoruba culture for many years.

According to Prof. Izidoro, Yoruba art is unique and has a profound impact on people who come into contact with it. “Yoruba art is characterized by its bold colors, intricate patterns, and powerful symbolism,” he explained. “It tells stories of the Yoruba people, their beliefs, and their way of life. Many of the students said they have never seen an exhibition of in-depth Yoruba art and divinity before, they were perplexed by the beauty and power of Olaiya’s sacred paintings and explanations

“I was amazed by the intricate details and patterns in the art,” said Prof Izidoro . “It’s incredible to see how much meaning and symbolism is contained in each piece. I feel like I’ve learned so much about Yoruba culture just by looking at these works of art.”

For many of the academics in attendance, the exhibition was an opportunity to deepen their understanding of Yoruba culture and explore its connections to Brazilian culture. “The Yoruba people have had a significant influence on Brazilian culture, particularly in the areas of religion, music, and dance,” said Prof. Izidoro . “This exhibition has given us a chance to explore those connections in more detail and gain a deeper appreciation for Yoruba art.”

The Yoruba man and Òrìşà

The Yorùbá theology places man at a vantage position. He is the one who manages the Yorùbá ecosystem situated on Earth. He is òrìṣà himself because his orí connects him to Olódùmarè, the one who is the Keeper of his destiny. Man, within the abundant natural resources in his environments developed one of the most complex cultures where man and god now interact. These resources, which include wood, plants, metal, and clay equally influenced the quality and quantity of the production of their artworks and art objects, which serve mainly religious purposes.

Therefore, it is worthy of note that the Yorùbá indigenous art has always reflected their composite socio-cultural and religious beliefs. One such is the belief in the existence of the celestial realm and the constant and continuous interactions between that realm and the terrestrial world where man is in charge. This indicates that the Yorùbá cosmos is one and there is no clear-cut demarcation between the physical and the spiritual realms of the people.

In essence, death is not a total end to a man’s life, but a transition to another realm from where the dead can still interact with the living. Therefore, in the indigenous thought of the Yorùbá, nature consists of spiritual and physical phenomenon where both the physical and spiritual realms comingle and operates as one entity without demarcation.

At the helm of Yorùbá cosmos is Olódùmarè, the Supreme Being, who controls both the spiritual and physical. Assisting Olódùmarè in administering the universe are several deities called òrìṣ àand spirits who serve as intermediaries between Olódùmarè and the living. The ancestors, also known as ará-ọ̀run (heavenly beings), are a subclass of the spirits and they pay intermittent visits to the physical world to help solve problems relating to their households and communities.

Consequently, we cannot undermine the place of the òrìṣà in the scheme of things especially as they help man through his orí to have access to Olódùmarè. When the òrìṣ àare venerated, it is only a means to reach Olódùmarè the Supreme Being. They are powerful and central to the culture and religion of the people. There are enough òrìṣà to take care of all the different aspects of a man’s life. Their roles cannot be underestimated in all the areas of man’s endeavours including but not limited to life, success, love, child-bearing, health, harvest, and death.

Adeyinka Olaiya, an international and contemporary Yorùbá Artist and writer is using this exhibition to reenact the roles of artists in producing art in the service of religion. By this, he is not only honouring the Yorùbá belief system and worldview but also promoting the culture of the people by documenting it visually and symbolically. The celebration of òrìṣà by Adeyinka Olaiya is celebrating man, his Ori , the òrìṣà, and Olódùmarè.

We are aghast beyond comprehension to see a group of misguided elders regrouping under another hang-rope organization: Omo Eko Pataki endorsing the Lagos Labour Party Gubernatorial Candidate, Chinedu Patrick Rhodes Vivour in what is seen as a last kick of a dying horse by the so called frustrated Elders.

To many reasonable right thinking members of the society, this chameleonic disgruntled groups now deceitfully marauding from Ayo Adebanjo Afenifere Group to Lagos Elders to Rhodes Vivour Family clan to PDP-LP amalgam group of same bloodline of mischiefs.

We are not surprised to see the remnants of the Lagos PDP; a divided house of commotion and jesters abandoning their own PDP party man and Guber Candidate of same characters; Abdulazeez Adediran Jandor for Chinedu Patrick Rhodes Vivour of the Labour Party.

Regrettably, this macabre dance of shame is premeditated in pursuit of a wild goose chase to whip up ethnic sentiments and cause unnecessary inter ethnic strife and bigotry between the Yorubas and Igbos in Lagos State.

We are proud to state unequivocally that the Igbos in Lagos are more humane, friendly and wiser to vote for the APC continuity in Lagos State, the Ohaneze Ndigbo leaders, Non- Indigenous groups, youths, Students, Market women and stakeholders of the various markets have all spoken unequivocally; Alli Baba, Obi Cubana and Cubana Chief Priest have all spoken widely to the high heaven in support of the real Omoluabi Eko Pataki- Mr Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu and Obafemi Hamzat’s re-election as the Executive Governor and Deputy Governor of Lagos State.

We reiterating with all sense of decorum that Lagosians have decide and resolved to massively re-elect and vote for Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu for second term as the Executive Governor of Lagos State alongside all APC House of Assembly candidates in Lagos State come Saturday 18th March, 2023.

We are aware Chief Olabode George is most notoriously renowned pathological lier and his penchants for deceits is second to none, having serially admitted to go on self exile since 2015 and 2019 after President Muhammadu Buhari won his Presidential Election, now he resorted to same gimmick of charades when Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu emerged as President-elect, till date he is yet to fulfill his promised decision to board the next available “korope” to the neighboring Cotonou Benin Republic for his resting exile, unfortunately only for “Baba Go Exile” to stay behind causing monumental confusion unabatedly.

We know for sure Patrick Rhodes Vivour of the Labour Party is going now where, except to join his felllow Anambra kinsman Peter Obi in thier self-driven illusions.

We appeal and implore all Lagosian to vote for a greater Lagos, accelerated economic growth, aesthetic infrastructural development, uncommon health care delivery, succinct education sector, youth and women empowerment to mention a few.
