São Paulo, August 28, 2025 – The Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Olayemi Michael “Yemi” Cardozo , has reconnected with his Afro-Brazilian roots through a symbolic cultural gesture in São Paulo. Cardozo donated his latest book, Whispers of Afro-Brazilian Heritage, to the Afro-Brazilian Museum, the largest institution of its kind in Brazil.

The book documents the history and legacy of Afro-Brazilian returnee families in Lagos, Nigeria, highlighting the influence of Brazilian architecture, cuisine, and traditions that remain present in the Popo Aguda district. Iconic sites such as the Cathedral and the historic Da-Rocha House are featured as examples of Brazilian-inspired designs in Lagos.

Cardozo , himself a descendant of a returnee family, was warmly received by the museum’s director, Flávia Martins, who described the donation as a meaningful contribution to strengthening ties between Brazil and Nigeria. He was accompanied by Professor Tayo Ajayi, linguist and Director of the Center for Afro-Brazilian Studies at Lagos State University (LASU).

The Afro-Brazilian Museum (Museu Afro Brasil), located in São Paulo’s Ibirapuera Park, is one of the most important cultural institutions in Latin America dedicated to African heritage and its influence in Brazil. Housing over 6,000 works and historical artifacts, the museum’s collections span religious objects, traditional clothing, sculptures, paintings, and documents that trace the contributions of Africans and their descendants to Brazilian society.

It is not only a center of memory and preservation but also a space for dialogue on identity, diaspora, and resistance. For Nigeria, where Afro-Brazilian returnees left a lasting imprint, Cardoso’s donation connects two chapters of a shared history across the Atlantic.

Speaking on the occasion, Cardozo said the donation reflected his pride in his Afro-Brazilian ancestry and his hope to see stronger cultural bridges between both nations. “This heritage belongs not only to Brazil or Nigeria but to all descendants of the diaspora,” he added.

Brasília, August 26, 2025 – As Nigerian President Bola Tinubu concluded his two-day state visit to Brazil, marked by the signing of multiple agreements to boost cooperation, one academic played a quietly pivotal role behind the scenes: Professor Tayo Julius Ajayi, a linguist and expert in Portuguese and Afrobrazilian studies from Lagos State University.

During this visit, Nigeria and Brazil signed Memoranda of Understanding spanning trade, energy, aviation, science, finance, and more. In the midst of these strategic dialogues, the presence of Prof Ajayi reinforces the importance of language in the diplomatic process. Prof. Ajayi, a respected figure in translation and linguistic studies who serves as Director of the Centre for Afrobrazilian Studies at Lagos State University, sees this as more than mere interpretation.

According to him “ With the several treaties and bilateral accords between Nigeria and Brazil, it is important to also invest in the Portuguese language in Nigerian colleges. This will further bring both countries together and break the language barrier.”

His remarks echo a broader academic push for enhanced cultural ties. In his recent 109th inaugural lecture at LASU, titled “Interlinguistic Interactions and Resultant Phenomena: Agglutinative and Inflectional Languages,” Prof. Ajayi proposed initiatives such as introducing Yoruba language programs in Brazilian universities, establishing Nigerian scholarships for Brazilian students to learn Yoruba in Nigeria, and sending Nigerian Yoruba instructors to teach in Brazil under a collaborative exchange model.
These initiatives are intended to reinforce Afro-Brazilian cultural connections, especially since Yoruba has long influenced Brazilian Portuguese in religious, culinary, and oral traditions.

Prof. Ajayi highlighted the linguistic interplay between Portuguese, an inflectional language, and Yoruba, an agglutinative one, noting that this cross-linguistic synergy demands dedicated scholarly attention and preservation.

His professional profile further underlines his suitability for this role. He earned his doctorate from the Federal University of Minas Gerais in Brazil and has served as a scholar with both the Brazilian PEC-G programme and SOAS in London. He has also worked as consultant, translator, and interpreter for international organizations including UNESCO, UNDP, and UNCTAD.

Prof. Tayo Ajayi’s presence at the State House in Brasília during President Tinubu’s visit symbolizes more than linguistic assistance—it represents the embodiment of academic diplomacy. His long-term vision for strengthened cultural and educational bridges between Nigeria and Brazil could well shape a new chapter in South-South cooperation.
