A remarkable and medically perplexing case in Brazil has captured national and international attention after a one-month-old baby, officially declared dead following an extended resuscitation effort, unexpectedly showed signs of life nearly two hours later—just moments before his body was to be transferred to a funeral service.
The infant, Noah Gabriel da Cruz Santos, had been receiving treatment at Santa Casa de Rio Claro, in São Paulo State, after being born prematurely on June 15, 2026, at 35 weeks of gestation. He was diagnosed with cleft palate, a congenital malformation affecting the roof of the mouth that compromised his breathing and feeding, requiring continuous care in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) while awaiting transfer to a specialized surgical center.
On July 15, the day Noah turned one month old, his condition suddenly deteriorated, resulting in a cardiorespiratory arrest. According to the hospital, the neonatal team immediately initiated advanced cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and continued lifesaving efforts for approximately 45 minutes, following the protocols established by the Brazilian Society of Pediatrics. Despite exhaustive attempts, the infant showed no response, and doctors officially certified his death.
Following the declaration of death, Noah remained in the NICU for approximately one hour while legal formalities were completed and his parents were given time to say their final goodbye. He was then transferred to another area of the hospital to await collection by the funeral service selected by the family.
What happened next has been described by hospital officials as one of the most extraordinary events in the institution’s more than 100-year history.
As funeral employee Regina Célia Paschoal, who has 17 years of professional experience, prepared to collect the infant’s body, she noticed movement inside the sealed body bag. Initially believing her eyes were deceiving her, she looked again and realized the baby was moving and attempting to breathe. She immediately alerted hospital staff, who rushed to reassess the infant.
Doctors confirmed that Noah had regained vital signs and immediately transferred him back to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, where emergency treatment resumed. Two days later, after the specialized hospital bed he had already been awaiting became available, Noah was transferred to the Hospital for Rehabilitation of Craniofacial Anomalies (HRAC/USP), widely known as Centrinho, in Bauru, to continue his treatment.
In an official statement, Santa Casa de Rio Claro emphasized that all medical and legal protocols for confirming death had been rigorously followed. The hospital stressed that its Neonatal ICU is fully equipped and staffed by experienced specialists, including the physician responsible for Noah’s resuscitation, who has 14 years of experience in neonatology. Administrators also stated that no evidence of medical negligence or procedural failure had been identified.
The hospital described the incident as “one of the most inexplicable episodes in its century-long history,” acknowledging that, while many healthcare professionals and family members regard the event as a miracle, the institution remains committed to scientific investigation, ethics, and transparency.
Medical experts have suggested that the case could represent an extremely rare phenomenon known as the Lazarus phenomenon, or autoresuscitation—the spontaneous return of circulation after resuscitation efforts have been discontinued. Although documented in medical literature, the condition is exceptionally uncommon, and its exact physiological mechanisms remain poorly understood. Proposed explanations include delayed effects of resuscitation medications, changes in chest pressure after CPR, or other complex cardiovascular responses. However, no medical explanation has been confirmed for Noah’s case.
For Noah’s parents, Leticia and Josenildo, the experience defies explanation. After believing they had lost their son and beginning preparations for his funeral, they were called back to the hospital and found him alive once again. The family has described the event as nothing short of a miracle, while physicians continue to regard it as one of the most extraordinary and scientifically unexplained cases they have ever encountered.
